Gemini 3.8 Flash Is Here: Google's New AI Model Takes Aim at OpenAI and Anthropic

Google has releasedGemini 3.8 Flash, its newest AI model designed to deliver stronger reasoning, coding and autonomous agent capabilities without the high cost typically associated with frontier AI models.

Announced on September 2, Gemini 3.8 Flash is described by Google as its most intelligent “workhorse” model yet. The company says it brings major improvements over Gemini 3.7 Flash, particularly for software engineering, agentic tasks and complex multi-step reasoning.

A model built for AI agents

One of the biggest changes with Gemini 3.8 Flash is its focus onlong-running autonomous tasks.

Instead of simply answering a prompt, the model can reason through complex problems, use tools repeatedly and continue working through multiple steps to reach a result.

Google says Gemini 3.8 Flash performed strongly on long-horizon software engineering tasks, including its DeepSWE v1.1 benchmark. The model is designed to handle complex engineering problems from start to finish while maintaining a much lower operating cost than larger frontier models.

This could make the model particularly interesting for developers building AI coding assistants and autonomous software agents.

Google is also targeting cybersecurity

Alongside the standard model, Google introducedGemini 3.8 Flash Cyber.

The cybersecurity-focused model is designed to help trusted defenders discover vulnerabilities and automatically develop patches. Google says it achieved more than 70% success on an internal vulnerability-discovery benchmark covering multiple programming languages.

Google also says its security teams have already used the model to discover and patch vulnerabilities in its own software.

The price could be the biggest story

Gemini 3.8 Flash launches at an introductory API price of$0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens.

Google says that introductory pricing will remain in place through December 31, 2026, before increasing to $1.50 per million input tokens and $7.50 per million output tokens.

That makes Gemini 3.8 Flash particularly interesting for developers who need powerful AI but cannot afford the cost of running larger frontier models.

Google is accelerating the AI race

The timing is also significant.

OpenAI has just launchedGPT-6 Astra, while Anthropic is continuing to push its Claude models. Google is now responding with another rapid Gemini release focused heavily on coding and autonomous AI agents.

Gemini 3.8 Flash is already available through Google's AI ecosystem, and it has also begun rolling out to GitHub Copilot for developers.

The AI race is therefore moving beyond simply asking which chatbot gives the best answers.

The bigger competition is becomingwhich AI model can actually get complex work done — faster, more reliably and at a lower cost.

And with Gemini 3.8 Flash, Google clearly wants to be one of the leaders in that race.
